7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like many homeowners, your gutters aren’t something you often think about. They need regular gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their functionality is very simple.

It’s not until your rain gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you understand just how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most roofs in Providence. They blend into the exterior unless the homeowner decided on copper or wood … building materials that are meant to stand out! Most are crafted from durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of rain gutters is to provide a route of minimal resistance for rain and snow to get off your roof. When they are in good shape, your gutters will direct runoff away from the home’s foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mold and mildew, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from rust.

When they are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and surrounding property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to fix to be the reason for major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is easy and safe. If you see any of the following issues, it’s a strong indication that your gutters have some type of damage.

Once you find a gutter problem, you can decide whether it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying by yourself or if it’s something you’d rather hire a gutter repairman for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Sitting water near your home is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not routing the rain runoff away from your home the way they should be. Standing water can cause mold, weakening of your foundation, and provides the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. And, it will make the areas around your home constantly wet and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Mold or mildew is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the rain gutters or on the exterior of your home. Mold and mildew mean there is excessive moisture around that area – a possible issue with the rain gutters could be to blame. Remember that mold and mildew are more likely to grow on the north side of a house anyway, so if that’s where these substances are appearing, it may just be because that area gets very little direct sunlight on it. This is a time when the advice and expertise of a gutter specialist in Providence would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You’ll need to wait until it’s actually raining to find this type of gutter issue. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that you have gutter damage. It might just be that the gutter is full of debris and should be cleaned out. In either case, you want to have it checked ASAP.

Basement Leaks

Based on the design of your home’s basement, the leaking might be caused by any number of things. The pooling problem we discussed before could definitely cause a basement leak. Egress windows and even cinder block walls can only keep out so much water. That’s why it is necessary to keep your gutters in good shape!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters pour directly onto the ground in most cases, and landscaping should be laid out to work with this flow of water to help it submerge into the ground. But, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will cause rainfall to overflow or pool where it shouldn’t. This rain water can destroy plants by force or by overwatering. It will also displace flower bed materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are the first sign that there is too much moisture on a surface. Water marks are sometimes left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated. You will usually find water marks right beneath the gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a typically an indication that water is pouring down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they definitely have damage. After a storm, it’s a smart idea to walk around your home to identify any damage to the roof, exterior, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to any standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are some easy tips Providence Gutters Plus recommends to prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least one time each year. You can lengthen the amount of time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out. As with anything else, the better you maintain your rain gutters, the less issues you’ll have with them.

The recommended time to clean out gutters is in the spring, but to be cautious, give them a cleaning in the fall, too. A lot of homeowners choose to clean their gutters on their own, but there are many local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to handle the mess or the risk.

Check your gutters often. Signs of damage can often be visible from the outside of the gutters. A quick inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – should reveal any of the problems we discussed above.

We’d suggest that you do an exterior home inspection after each season to confirm that your gutters are working the right way.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Fixing a problem before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably and quickly.

But, if you let the issue go on too long, you could end up making repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
